Hello!
Jack, and I are walking from Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower in 8 days, on the 27th June. We will be covering 240 miles in total, at 30 miles a day. We are doing this in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK, which is the central charity for the disease.
Alzheimer's is often overlooked, despite it being one of the most distressing and dehibiliating diseases in our modern world. Personally, I have seen my grandma over the past three years decline rapidly from an independent, intelligent woman to someone who needs 24 hour care to survive. The disease has robbed her of her memory, dignity and personality - subsequently I am gradually losing a best friend and gran. The great strain that my family has been under to care for my gran is obvious. My mum has been my gran's main carer for the past 5 years, and has seen a relationship where she was the one to seek maternal care, dissolve into one where she provides all the care.
My personal example is not a rare one, and Alzheimer's does not just affect the sufferer but it sets it roots across family and friends. Loved ones have to care for sufferers of the disease, and can only watch as the person they love slowly begins to lose all self: forgetting their name, forgetting who they are, forgetting how to live.
Jack and I are doing this walk because we are both accutely aware of the crippling effects Alzheimers has upon the mind and body. We want to fight this by doing something which forces us to push our mind and bodies into a place where we dont know if we can go. But we will.
Whatever money you give would be massively appreciated, and will only drive us on even more. It's a long fight against this disease, but with the money you give, you'll be giving Alzheimer's Research UK the ammunition to find the cure and help treat the sufferers - who, for some of us, in 50 or so years might be us.
Jeg elsker simpelthen de Bewley fyre
